Therapy Dolls

>>Lois, may I have some pins. [music] [sewing machine rumbles]>>I’m going to really go home and dye my
hair green and look like one of the dolls.>>We have a good time when we get together
[laughs].>>It’s an afternoon out for me [laughs].>>We can put little pigtails onto them or
some of them we do with braids.>>The glue, I put so much on that it permeated
the fabric. Is it ok?>>[whispers] Just stick it on.>>We do 200 to 300 dolls a year.>>The ladies who do the real job are putting
the legs on it. Sometimes, if you don’t do it right, one’s going this way and the
other one’s that way.>>Well, it probably takes about 25 hours if
you’re figuring it from start to finish.>>[interviewer] Per doll?>>Per doll.>>The wilder the hair, the better.>>I’m good with the scissors. Cut it short
enough, you don’t have to do anything with it.>>I’m into the layered look.>>They’re given to children who seem to
be really anxious about what’s going to be happening to them.>>I have vague memories of a tonsillectomy
when I was a child and there were no dollies given to me.>>Woo! How do you like this one?>>I’d like to see their response when they
are able to pick one out.>>[interviewer] Have you ever gotten to see
a child playing with the dolls?>>No. I haven’t. [music]>>Do do do do do. I think she looks cute.>>Oh my goodness.>>It didn’t go in.>>You have to wiggle it a little bit? Got it. Then we need that other piece. This one’s really pretty. Look daddy we made her an IV. And I get to
take her home.>>If you can put a smile on a child’s face
and help alleviate the fear, the anxiety, discomfort, all those big boogie-men that
they face when they’re in a hospital and they’re going through some sort of major
treatment, if the doll helps, I’m glad to be able to do that.>>[interviewer] How come she has pink teeth?>>She had a popsicle! Rar!>>Everybody puts their best into it and we
enjoy the process. It’s just a very happy feeling around the dolls. To me, I think we make them with love. And somehow, children are going to pick up
on that.
