    Hi, my name is Chantal Joffe and I’m a painter. Crossrail is putting art into some of the stations on the Elizabeth line and I’m working on the one for Whitechapel, which is a priviledge. My idea of a really nice way to spend a Sunday is to walk up to Whitechapel, Brick Lane. Working on the piece began by thinking about the neighbourhood and the people who live there.     We are building today one of the greatest infrastructure projects in Europe. When you’re building something as big as this you want to do something more. We were given the challenge of how to bring art to the Crossrail programme. We want to see art to be a prominent feature of all our main stations in the central section so that’s what the Culture Line is about, it’s an experience when you come on Crossrail that’s not just a railway journey it’s an experience of London, art and all the other things that go with it.     Crossrail Art Programme: Farringdon station western ticket hall artwork announced

    The concept behind the artwork was to make something that referenced the history of the site – the jewellers and the gem industry from Hatton Garden, but also some of the kind of iron work and silversmiths and stuff that worked in the area as well. With the western ticket hall the idea is a series of tumbling jewels if you like, that would kind of cascade down the diagonal panels by the escalators and then traverse right around the concourse and then come back up again.
