My Visit to Yad Vashem – The Museum of Holocaust Art

What makes this museum unique is that
it’s the only place in the world where a whole museum is dedicated to the art of
the Holocaust We have the largest collection in the world of art created during the time of the Holocaust. I think for me the experience here that reminds you know six million is overwhelming but it brings it down to individuals and
their lives and be able to touch and see something from their actual hands almost
as it was just made, so a real connection to the actual spark and spirit and soul
and also reminds you of what’s lost how many of these if they had survived would have been the next Picasso or had a whole body of work that was lost and how much
art never survived to make it here in the first place. It’s creativity I think
this is something that is inside you when you were an artist and it needs to
go somewhere and I think the worst the threat becomes the more urgent
the need becomes. If you’re in a gray world and a dark world to escape with
colorful pictures. They were very brave and found ways of actually documenting what they were seeing which of course was highly illegal and could get them
killed and in some cases did. We just saw a painting now of somebody who had no
paint, think in the Terezin ghetto and he had to create his own paint and
created a whole new way of making paint. We are talking about excellent artists
who created art in the top cities of Europe but unfortunately because they
were murdered they were forgotten. It is our duty to remember them and show what great art they created under the most difficult of times. Many folks come
to the main exhibit at Yad Vashem it’s a very deep meaningful challenging
experience but to come here also can shed a different light and perspective
coming to the art element of the museum and having that experience I think is
both eye opening and inspirational as well as deeply meaningful.
