Music Therapy Helps Kids Heal at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital

People might have a misperception of what music therapy is. They might think it’s listening to recorded
music, pressing play on a CD player or nowadays an iPad on YouTube. But where the therapy
happens is actually in the creation of the music. It’s in that relationship between the therapist
and the patient. It is drawing out that masterpiece that exists
within the child actually in the act of making music. There’s a lot more that goes into it than
just going in and just singing to a baby. If they’re really agitated and suddenly with
the music they stop crying and they start to relax their body a little bit more, their
heart rate comes back down or they even start to close their eyes, that’s how I know what
I’m doing is effective. It means they’re relaxing enough to help fall
asleep or become more comfortable in their environment. Some of what these kids go through can’t really
be summed up with words. It’s best processed and expressed through their music.
