(applauding) I think a lot of the songs
for Jack and The Bones are beautiful and dark. Kind of like a pessimistic
outlook on optimism. ♪ Speak in a tongue
only I know baby ♪ – I did The Voice
like four years ago. And made it pretty far. I got fifth place on that. So that’s a healthy amount of, you know, exposure to the world. Most people know us from
being on American Idol. We both almost
backed out of Idol. Like within the similar frame
of time, like timeframe. – A couple days
before Hollywood week. – And in hindsight it was, and if this hadn’t
happened I would probably be very annoyed. – Yeah. ♪ Some days I got a
problem with everyone ♪ – So here’s what happened. We were sitting in a holding
room for American Idol. And I was sitting kind
of in a row behind her. And she stood up, and I was like, wow,
she’s really cute. And that was pretty much
it and you walked away. They make you take
psych evaluation tests where you have to answer
like 500 questions and they’re absurd. – Make sure you’re
mentally stable. – They’re the most
absurd questions you’ve ever seen in your life. Anyways, I was taking
the psych evaluation test and she walked in and I noticed
her pants were really cool. – I was wearing yellow
velvet bell-bottoms. – That was our only interaction. (humming) And then I don’t know, we just hung out a lot. And then I was convinced it
was gonna be a friendship and then it wasn’t. I think with something like, with these reality TV shows, they’re very taxing. It’s still a very
emotionally draining experience that makes people
grow together really quickly. And I think us kind of
having a natural chemistry mixed with that like intensity, kind of expedited
that process of us figuring out that
we liked each other. Yeah. ♪ But the anticipation
of feeling it go ♪ ♪ From every relation
that I’ve ever known ♪ I think we kinda felt
like we had just been put through the wringer together and spent a lot
of time together. I think we were like,
“I think if we can “spend this much
time together and not “have killed each other
yet, then we should “see if we can spend a
little more time together.” Obviously it’s an
amazing experience but it’s very taxing and
it’s a lot of pressure and things that you
will only understand if you are there. And before we were just
like, how real is this because you’re doing
a reality TV show and you kinda get lost
between what’s real and what’s forced to
speed camaraderie. Or force to be friendship. And then we were like no, you’re actually pretty
cool on dry land. You’re still a cool guy, so, that was how I felt. – This is a cover that
we’re both very fond of – Songs that I perform,
original songs are pretty self-reflective of
the time that I’m living in and how I’m feeling
in the moment and the relationships
that I’m in or the relationship that I’m in. All these songs are
very reflective. – It’s always gonna be any
time you write something personal and you share
it, it’s vulnerability. That’s pretty much always I think
gonna be the case. No matter how confident
of a performer or writer or whatever you are. ♪ And say hallelujah ’til
he sank into the sea ♪ I guess the older I’ve gotten, honesty is just
important in general. I think I’ve gone
through some things in my life where I’ve
kind of been punished for not being honest. Punished really
mostly internally. ♪ Yes I’m alright ♪ I’m just at a peculiar time ♪ In my life This is the thing that
kind of most closely aligns what I’m sort
of naturally good at and was sort of destined to do. Even though I don’t
really believe in destiny. But it sort of feels like that. Lined up with a genuine
love of doing it. Like those two things are the most in sync. I haven’t found
anything else that kind of has that same balance. I really like the guitar sounds. – Yeah it sounds really good. – A song called Glass House is one that is kind of the most personally like self-reflective. It’s told in a
non-first person way, but it is a first
person narrative. It’s kind of about
moments in my life where I haven’t been
honest with myself or with somebody
else for the sake of saving face and
for the sake of being afraid to hurt feelings which I think 100% of the
time is gonna backfire. You’re gonna end up
hurting feelings 10 fold down the line. It’s just a way of pushing it. Pushing it farther back. The song started with
the opening line. And it’s the tough has a
way of getting when it goes, it never really lies
with what it shows in the heart of a man. Basically meaning
when things get hard, they don’t get easy
until you deal with them. You can’t really just hide them and expect them to go away. It’s much easier said
than done because– – It’s like one of those
things that seems obvious or should seem obvious rather. or should seem obvious rather. ♪ Well the tough ♪ Has a way of

It’s so relatable. Thoughts going on stage. What are we thinking on stage? – It’s always different. – It’s always different. – I think the older I
get the more unhinged I’m sort of becoming
with what I say. But I’ve never really been
worried about offending anybody. – Sometimes I’m
thinking of the lyrics. Sometimes I’m literally
watching Taylor’s mouth move so that I can
sing those same words at the exact same time. So we can be really synced up. ♪ Ooh ♪ Crazy in the air tonight – You have to be
willing to fail, I guess is one way to put it. Because you’ll
never make good art or stuff that is
risky or different. ♪ ‘Cause I’m tired ♪ Of thinking all the time A lot of the times I feel
like I’m thinking about how much I hate how
much I’m thinking about. ‘Cause I just want to
be having a great time and losing myself. The greatest performances ever and the greatest
performance you see them, you see them lose themselves and you can tell
that they’re not so focused on– – Thinking. – What they’re saying as opposed
to how they’re saying it. Because what they’re saying
is already established. They’ve written the
song, it’s already there. Now it’s about delivering it. ♪ Oh oh oh ♪ Where did you go We’ve only been on
a stage together like twice.
– In Idol. – Outside of that.
– Well I don’t even – [Taylor] Consider Idol. ‘Cause I don’t think
I looked at you once when we were doing that. – Right. – [Taylor] This is our
debut filmed like thing. – Yeah, we have done
two shows together. One of them was like three songs and the other one
was like five songs. So this is– – This is a moment. – This is definitely a moment
for Jack and The Bones. Yes. ♪ Give me a reason to love you – This is such a new project. The reason it started
was because we had this really bizarre
night in the apartment where like, something happened
and all of these songs just kind of came out. – Lightening struck.
– There were like three – [Taylor] Songs that came
out in a matter of like an hour. ♪ So be on your way ♪ Until darker days – Taylor is a great writer. He writes a majority
of the music. We kinda sit and
talk about themes and I think a lot of
it’s inspired from that. I might change a word
or two here and there, but the set that
we’re doing tonight is as pretty Taylor John
Williams heavy written. The small part of being up there and feeling those moments
where you’re just expressing and you see it in
peoples faces that you’re telling a
story that they don’t have the courage to tell. Or something that
they’ve been feeling and you’re speaking it. You’re speaking
some story for them that they’ve experienced. That those moments
are so profound and so epic and deep and it’s like what life is all about that you just forget. ♪ Like a sailor ♪ Of the night Music is everything. It means so much. I don’t know what I would be without music. So many defining
moments in my life and I think everyone
has songs you know that characterize
parts of their life or you’re an angsty teenager
and you have a crush on a boy and he says he doesn’t
wanna be your boyfriend in the cafeteria, so you go home and you listen to some angsty
song by Alanis Morissette or something like that. It’s like the
soundtrack to your life. ♪ You bound me down ♪ Back to the ground again One of the songs is
Blue Flame that I wrote. And for me, I definitely
had a similar experience to Taylor where I’ve
prolonged hurting someone else and kind of not
telling the truth and not being honest with myself or honest with someone
else about how I feel or something like that. And it just prolongs
the pain and makes it kind of go deeper and deeper. ♪ Ooh oh Blue Flame is a
little bit like that. It’s kind of about
just continuing to let someone burn you. But also like
they’re your flame. They’re your love and that
kind of weird dichotomy between being in
love with someone that it isn’t right or whatever. Kind of just continuing to
let someone be your flame as they continue to burn you. The opening line as
well as every little thing about you reflects in me. That’s a really short
thing but it says so much to me as far
as relationships go. I feel like usually
you’re mirroring things. Usually some type of
internal issue you’re having. You sit and not
talk about because you don’t want to
hurt their feelings but they’re probably feeling
the exact same thing. I lived a really long time of that feeling. So that probably
would be it for me. Yeah. ♪ Every little thing

out of doing music. The thing that really makes
me fall in love with it, I experience such a small
percentage of the time compared to the amount
of time I’ve spent kind of being
stressed out about it, which is interesting, but I feel like that small
little nugget of joy is so like profound
that it’s worth it. Not to say that I’m
constantly stressing or I’m in complete bliss. It’s not that intense. But there’s so much that goes on off of a stage that you
have to put into this or else it just sucks. ♪ I ain’t scared of ♪ What you find I want people to hear this music and feel like it’s refreshing. I hope that we’re refreshing. I hope that we’re doing
something different. I hope this feels like
something new and inspiring. ‘Cause it was very inspired. – All the songs are about
what we’ve experienced and also what
we’re experiencing. So the songs are about the past but they’re also
about the present and it’s kind of all in the
same I think for both of us because it’s like
love is like love. And you fell in love once and you’re falling
in love again. It’s kind of this world
wind experience of kind of heartbreak and this amazing
feeling at the same time. And I don’t know, all
the music is kind of about all of that. But yeah. ♪ I don’t think ♪ That we can be friends – We have a song called We Tried And I think it’s gonna be really relatable to anybody
who’s attempted to be friends with their
ex immediately after ending the relationship. The mature thing to
do seemed to be like, “Okay, we don’t work
in this relationship, “but we should still be
in each others lives. “We were together for a decade. “We can’t just
abandon each other. “Why would we do that?” And then I eventually
came to realize that the mature thing
to do is to be like, “We need to not
talk for a while. “We need to build our own
lives up without each other.” What made me realize
that that was the actual mature thing
to do was that was the hard thing to do. That was the really
difficult thing to do was to be like, to sever communication
for a while. ‘Cause you don’t want
that person to think you don’t care about them. You don’t wanna feel like
they don’t care about you. You spent all this
time together. You’ve built a life together. It feels so wrong
intuitively to just cut them out of your lives, but I think it’s just
kind of necessary. So We Tried is about that. It’s about, you know. The opening line is I don’t
think that we can be friends, but we tried. Felt like a mature
decision at the time. And I think anybody
who’s attempted to maintain that relationship
fresh after a breakup will probably relate to it. ♪ I don’t think that

it would be right ♪ ♪ Found it to be wrong ♪ I guess some things

it a little bit earlier. We’ve both were no
strangers to reality TV and voice competitions. It’s an amazing experience. You get to go out there and sing a little bit. And there’s like a thing
between someone saying, “I can’t wait to come
see you perform tonight” and someone saying,
“I can’t wait “to come hear you
perform tonight.” And it’s like this weird, you feel like a circus act. But it also sucks
to complain about it because it’s like oh god,
I get to do what I love. Oh it’s so sad. And it’s like it’s
a blessed life and I’m super privileged. We are so lucky to
get to do what we do. And sometimes we’re like,
don’t feed the animals. We feel a little bit like that. – Right. I completely agree
with that sentiment. And it is weird being in a profession that feels very
trite to complain about. It feels like when
you are in the process of achieving your dreams or
even in the middle of it, it feels like you weren’t
allowed to complain because you’re
achieving your dreams. But sometimes you just, things just suck no
matter what you do. And everybody kinda has
a right to vent that. – This is that vent. – This is that ventilation. – It’s called Sideshow. ♪ Rare and sweet is this life ♪ Though mine has
me feeling like ♪ ♪ A freak on her way to
