Intaglio Printmaking Techniques : Intaglio Printing Press Pressure

Hi, I’m Jason Shoemaker at Slip Best Printmaking
Workshop. And I’m going to talk about setting the pressure for Intaglio printmaking. We
have a registration mark, so it’s not necessary for this, but since we have them we’re going
to take advantage of it. You’re going to need the plate that you’re going to print with.
Go ahead and set that where it goes on your registration marks. And you’re going to need
a piece of the paper that you’re going to print with as well. The pressure’s going to
change depending on the kind of marks that are on the matrix and actually how thick the
matrix itself is. So what you can do, take the paper you’re going to use, set it on there
and actually run it through the press. And that paper is going to be embossed with whatever
imagery is on that plate. And you can look at that without having to ink and all that
and seeing about where your pressure is. If you do need to adjust the pressure, make sure
that your felts are disengaged
and make your adjustments here. Either tighter or loosen it up. But remember to always adjust
them in small increments. If you’re by yourself you’re going to have to jump from either side
of the press. If there’s two people of course that’s going to be easier. And it’s just a
little trial and error. And, but once everything looks good, go ahead and ink up your plate
and see what happens.
