Exploring the Bachelor of Musical Arts

The BMA is a program that really focuses
on training musicians who are interested in jazz improvisation and contemporary
music for musical lives in today’s world. Finding success today as a 21st century
musician really involves not just technical excellence, but in addition to
that the ability to adapt. There is a lot of musicians that are integrating
electronic music, integrating electro-acoustic techniques and in the
jazz field are on basically the cutting edge of creating and innovating new
music involving improvisation. It really allows the individual to steer
their own musical path. The BMA has a specific aspect called a cognate that
allows you to create a focus area outside of the conservatory. This could
be in neuroscience, it could be in art, it could be in entrepreneurship or geology
or literally any other area that Lawrence has to offer and this gives you
the flexibility to integrate your musical life with your intellectual life
in waves that are boundless. Students who are in the BMA program will
be working with world-class jazz faculty. Each have their kind of own area of
expertise and also are amazing collaborators together so students are
going to immerse themselves in one-on-one study and in small group
study and be able to work closely with the faculty. So it’s a beautiful
combination of high-level training in an improv jazz contemporary music but also
integrated into it is entrepreneurship. I really see what we’re offering in this
program has empowered learning, so taking what you want and what your dreams are
and helping you achieve those dreams.
