Paula Reid: Where were you when you found out you
were going to receive this honor? Ralph Johnson: I was at home, Verdine called me on the phone and said are you sitting down? Philip Bailey: I was probably on the golf course and I
probably missed my putt [laughs] Paula: You guys have won every award, received every honor, why is this one so unique? Ralph Johnson: It is the pinnacle. Um, it really talks about your
artistry and your contribution to American culture, and the culture of the world, really. Philip Bailey: Yeah, I mean, I can’t say it any better than he did [laughs]. Verdine White: It’s surreal. It is surreal. Once in a lifetime. Paula: Is there any song tonight that you hope they perform, any specific aspect of your career? Philip Bailey: I don’t think they
could do anything wrong tonight, you know It’s been it’s been a fabulous couple of
days and this is gonna be the highlight of it. Ralph Johnson: I have nothing to add to that. Verdine White: He’s right. Paula: You have some company! David Foster: Photobomb! Philip Bailey: Our other member! Our other member. The fourth member. Paula: Join, join! We were just talking about what song they hoped is performed tonight. Any hopes for you? David Foster: Oh I know exactly what’s going on. Philip Bailey: He knows what’s going on. He’s not saying anything! David Foster: I mean, you know, it’s gonna be great. But- you couldn’t screw up an Earth, Wind & Fire song. They’re so great you couldn’t screw them up. But- can I say that on TV? Paula: Of course you can say whatever- Philip Bailey: You just did! [laughs] Ralph Johnson: Thank you Davey! Paula: Of course, and- [David Foster whispering] Paula: You guys are in some pretty cool company tonight, the other honorees?>>Most definitely, there’s
no doubt, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sally Field Linda Ronstadt, Sesame Street, it’s
it’s very broad and it’s very diverse. Verdine White: And it talks about the culture, you know
that we all know about and we’re celebrating culture tonight, the best
that America has to offer, and we’re happy to be part of it. Paula: That’s right because it’s not an industry that’s honoring you, it’s the entire country! Ralph Johnson: Yes. Can’t add to that- you said it!
