Discover UEA’s new Institute of Productivity

At the heart of the Institute of
Productivity are the engineers of the future. This new Institute will support
businesses in our region by enabling them to work alongside our world-class
researchers and students to discover practical solutions to current and
future challenges. Our students, academics and businesses
will be able to explore together new ideas, to develop prototype designs and
create innovative products and services. Engineers at UEA
are taught about the cross-disciplines, they’re taught about electrical
engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, energy
engineering. And they’re taught about the boundaries and how we integrate those
boundaries so they find better system solutions to problems here at UEA. And in
that way we believe they’re going to be better engineers that can find holistic
solutions and not just look at their problems in silos. The Institute of
Productivity will have modern workshop spaces helping students to understand
how state-of-the-art subtractive manufacturing contrasts with the rapidly
growing additive manufacturing sector, hopefully allowing us to dispel the myth
that everything can be 3D printed. Instead the modern, creative design has a
range of tools they can use. Dedicated training facilities will be used to show
how manufacturing processes can be enhanced by advanced robotics on one
part of a production line rather than being used for their own sake everywhere.
But manufacturing isn’t just about making a product. At UEA, the
strengths from the School of Computing Sciences, Engineering, and the Norwich
Business School will support a shared studio space looking at everything from
supply chain management through to how industry 4.0 might affect productivity.
The 3D printers alongside our digital design studio which enable our visiting
industrial partners to collaborate with students at all levels, taking their
initial concept designs through to a working prototype in a short space of
time. This interaction can often lead to work placements or ultimately jobs. So
the Institute of Productivity at UEA is a new, exciting facility that’s going to
enable academics to come together with industry and our new students. Those
students entering higher education for the first time, who are Generation Z. We’re
excited to see what they’re going to do and how
they’re going to rise to the challenges – the societal challenges of engineering
to co-collaborate together with industry and our academics and find solutions
within the digital age. Training will be developed and delivered to enable
engineering and manufacturing businesses to learn about and adopt new practices,
tools and techniques and to collaborate on cutting-edge research projects to
boost business productivity and performance. As well as UEA investment,
the Institute benefits from a grant of 4.5 million pounds from the New Anglia
Local Enterprise Partnership for Norfolk and Suffolk. The New Anglia Advanced
Manufacturing and Engineering sector NAAME and TechEast industry sector
groups will be key delivery partners within the Institute of Productivity.
