Cleveland Institute of Art: Foundation 2019

[music playing] We start students in
the foundation year with a broad range of courses. We want to make sure that
everybody who’s coming in has an opportunity
to build skills where they don’t
have them, so that we have a general background. They’re going to be taking
basic design classes, drawing, material color, and
digital color courses. It’s like creating a
database in your head, so that when you’re working
from the imagination, you have the skills, and you
can pull that knowledge out and use it without
having to think about it. We have a foundation exhibition
at the end of each semester with lots and lots of work. So I think the
students sometimes are startled to see the volume
of work that they’ve created, and they can see their
own progress from semester to semester. Students have access to a lot
of resources and facilities, even outside the
foundation classes. We have a digital output
center, where the students can print very large format images. We also have a very
well-equipped fabrication studio that includes a
woodshop, metal, facilities, clay rooms, plaster
rooms, spray booth, all those kinds of facilities. It’s that sense of wonder
and that sense of discovery that we hope we’re instilling
that in the foundation year, and we want people to keep that
sense of discovery and wonder and never lose it. [music playing]
