Behind The Track: Tones & I – Dance Monkey [Art Supplies Edit]

hey guys what’s up and welcome back to
another tutorial I mean here in the studio it is so hot in here I need to
work on getting air conditioning the computer is going crazy because it’s so
hot so it’s working overtime let’s jump straight in today’s projects are going
to be looking at is my dance monkey remix I’ve been excited to go through
this one for a little while it’s been doing some really good things online
hearing some amazing feedback so I wanted to jump straight in it’s a bit
more of a big room toon bit more kind of anthem II kind of big dance room that
kind of stuff hands in the air kind of job so I wanted
to go through a few elements in this one with you so jump straight in the first
bit of this lead and most important part is a kick relatively similar processing
to what I’ve done before on some of these boosting up the low end in the top
hand get that crunchy sort of not crunchy the nice transients of the kick
and then the you know thumping low end I just need to make that fit if you don’t
know how to make those fit go jump into another video I’ve got plenty of those
I’ll truck one up in the top corner right now the base for this one this is
a pretty driving bass we’ve got a few different layers serum gives me my main
kind of run here it is yep serum and we’ll listen to this so it’s just
following the chords up and down and then we’ve got I think this one is just
following the the horn hits so if we’ve listened this one and then it goes in so
it just follows the hits and if we listen to them together they just run
nicely off each other you get the idea so on these basis
essentially we’ll just have a look at some of the processing EQ in compression
the OverDrive’s turned off on this but camel crusher I’m putting a bit of
distortion and warmth in there with some saturation a bit more EQ into OTT
multiband so if you have a look I’m controlling the top ends on this because
I’ve got a lot more top frequencies you know like super sores and stuff
going over the top so I needed these ones reined in from the base so it
wasn’t as top-heavy and didn’t cut through that’s what OTT does love that
plug-in if you haven’t got it go get around it seriously good more e
queuing – good good good good ah this is so this little thing here
this audio effect rock what I’m doing is essentially processing the two different
parts separately on this I’ve got the low end of the bass that is right down
here width so I’ve turned that right down to zero so it’s just mah knowing
everything under 144 in the base and then the top everything up from 144
doesn’t have anything on it so it’s still stereo and wide so that
essentially it’s just making the bass mono again just to make sure G’s more
compression bit more reverb limiting sidechain compression oh my god it goes
on forever transients so this one is a transient designer again taking more
high-end off it obviously I’ve had to play around with a fair few plugins here
and turn some on and off but this one come right down to minus 6 DB and the
transients helps it again not like clash with any other top frequencies and then
this one this brainworx bx control v2 doing a very similar job of doing mono
under 122 and stereo above 110 percent so it’s an extra a little bit wider and
then narrower underneath so probably didn’t need all
that that many times but it’s in there and it works so happy days and then
here’s some mix EQ as well that’s pretty much the same for both of those in the
basis will jump into sub similar it’s just running through the the chorus
section and the intro and stuff like that following the chords nice and easy
percussion my percussion is relatively simple to listen to the drop so I’ve got
a light drop clap going underneath this just provides some energy it’s fairly
standard a lot of people have done it in in life before the Kashmere drop clap
loop it’s pretty low because I don’t want people to like really hear it I
just want some energy behind like clapping on the beat that’s what it is
um then we’ve got a snare which is an acoustic snare that I’ve tuned up and
resampled from Kashmir’s that’s alright snare there catch me a shaker loop again
I’ve stitched this one back together from a few samples I like just put like
I said pulling little bits of each sample out and patching them back
together to fit the thing perfectly because if you’re just running dropping
sampling it might sound good but it sounds the same hats a little off beat
hat that’s pretty much it I’ve got the snare risers and things in
there as well and some finger snaps in the bin typical finger snap see how hard
it is in here well I’m dying anyway vocals now I had luckily got my hands on
the acapella shoutout to Samus J so he got the
acapella I don’t know whether he actually made it or not but shout-out to
him because that’s his copy that I got and it works really really well I’ve got
a top kick on this as well I should have shown you this earlier there’s a little
slight knock to this so it just creates that little transient on top of the kick
that cuts through especially in the in the drop and then we come to the
exciting part all of the big saws and leads and stuff in here
I’ve got cords going on throughout the whole thing in terms of the actual
chords that’s what you hear in there and then similar here just different
layerings this one’s a nice up edge from silence so it just goes up and down nice
little flute on page it’s beautiful and really what’s on this track so you can really hear the difference of
all those sores in their mix makes it really fill out let’s have a look at
these big ones now they come in so this is the main saw playing the main melody
I’ve got a few different layers as you can see big one low one highs and mids
and then some strings in there playing the chords as well but we’ll listen to
this main saw and then break it down so you can hear it being filtered in
through the through the filter so it’s pretty like a bouncy Connolly like but
like a real sort of Dutch house kind of thing from silence it’s vandalism packed
lead need your love again I’ve probably tweaked it I’ve thrown in camel crush I
OTT ping-pong reverb EQ and side chains this kind of stuff and then I’ve got
this really cool plugin from fabfilter called volcano 2 and then it gives you
some awesome if you play around with some of the presets in here it’s got
some really cool sort of flanger e style modulation that you can get out of it
really cool one from fabfilter basically easy washout I went through that in the
last video if you didn’t see that with something about you and then transient
designer as well to bring that down layering the next one is the big super
solo so have a listen that’s pretty standard
everybody knows what that kind of does and then we’ve got the horns so the
horns are a really integral part of this one
and then back up so I’ve got the low main ones and then some highs to fill it
out that follows the melody and then the mids here as well following the melody and then lastly the strings again
playing the chords and that’s essentially my lead sections so it’s
fairly stacked you’ve got to make sure if we have a look in here with this say
the super saw if I come up to the end you can see the mixing so I’ve brought
down because the super saw likes the top parts and I don’t like the lower parts
and in this main sort of here I’ve got more of the low in here I’ve obviously
ducked out some of the low mids but I’ve got more of the chunky low-end and
haven’t ducked too much of it out because that’s what we want to really
focus on oh man it is hot in this video but that pretty much takes us through
that project if you enjoyed guys please leave a like drop a comment or something
for me it does wonders if you have any ideas if you have any questions
regarding the production you’ve seen in this video let’s throw it down below I’m
excited to answer some questions otherwise I’ll see you again I’ll break
down another track for you hopefully get some aircon sorted in here because I’m
about losing kilos with all the sweat but check out the track the full links
will be in the description let’s have a wonderful week and we’ll see you guys
all very soon thanks for tuning in
