Auckland Art Gallery celebrates clay artist Wi Taepa

Auckland Art Gallery has opened
an exhibition that celebrates the artist Wi Taepa. The Te Atiawa man
is an accomplished carver but it’s his clay artwork
that sets him apart. And as Te Rina Kowhai found out, it’s a medium he has
a natural affinity with. From the origins of mother earth
to the maiden of clay, these treasures are born. With using only just his hands
and modern techniques, Taepa over the last 30 years has created these treasures
which he says all have an individual story. The 72-year-old, served in the Vietnam War
between 1970-72 but says his passion in clay has always been with him
since the age of five. The Retrospective exhibition
at Auckland Art Gallery will run until September. Te Rina Kowhai, Te Karere.
